With the Legions at his back he can now influence the senate and have the killers declared outlaws. One issue that always annoys me is seeing Caesar Augustus portrayed as somewhat sickly em;eror or conveniently sickly — and a bit of a coward; I don’t see how anyone with such a make-up could have accomplished even a small fraction of what Augustus accomplished. The book requires no prior reading or knowledge of the earlier books in Iggulden’s series. We can debate whether that word existed during this time, but for a writer who produced some fine Roman backdrops in his earlier books this clearly stands out as an oversight.
However, I needn’t have worried. My iggylden favourite of the Emperor series.
The book ends with Octavian standing triumphant over the dead bodies of the villains and Mark Antony getting his first look at the enigmatic and sensual Cleopatra. This fifth book in the series follows Octavian later to become Emperor Augustus as he sets about righting the wrongs of the senate.
The series was well received by many critics, but also drew comment that Iggulden sometimes changed historical facts either through ignorance or in order to create a more thrilling narrative.

I’m Right now, this is what I’m thinking to myself: A nation is in mourning. We mostly have records that don’t give a lot of details that could really tell a comprehensive story, but Conn Iggulden amazed me. I was treated to an almost exclusively militaristic view of Rome at the time of Caesar and the parts he played in making Rome the world power at that time.
All those niggles the purist may have are answered in the author notes at the back of the book. The most notable change in the main plot features Caesar and Brutus growing up as childhood friends Brutus was in reality 15 years younger than Caesar and sometimes rumoured to be his son, though this is unlikely.
Maar misschien net een beetje minder dan de vorige. In the excellent short story included at the end of the book, with Augustus at the end of his life fretting over who should rule the Empire after him, Livia was, inevitably, Sian Philips and Tiberius was George Baker.
My first concern was that this would be a shameless cash-in, but Iggulden treats the material and the period with iggulcen same respect and diligence that he did before.
This article does not cite any sources. This book hooked me from beginning to end, with its fast-paced action scenes, adorable characters, intriguing politics, talks of strategies and what have you I suppose the one thing that links all those is the love of a good tale.

After this brilliant book we have a shift in time periods for Conn his next book is set somewhat later than this series, and when i have more i will blog on it, he will be at a new publishers also, so we should see some fantastic new cover styles to compliment the book.

Conn Iggulden ends his Emperor series with a magnificent account of the aftermath of Caesar’s assassination and the determined mission of his adopted son Octavian to hunt down his killers. I highly recommend for any fan of historical fiction, focused on action and drama.
The author also includes historical end notes which are very relevant to the story. Unfortunately I felt it lost its initial swagger after that.
